DRR and Livelihood Training Center
offered to the community of Digkilaan in Iligan City
On June 25, 2012 – the Disaster Risk Reduction & Livelihood Training Center in barangay Digkilaan, Iligan City, was inaugurated.
Mr. Hugo Chittenden representing the donors opened the physical center to the people in the community to become a hub of activities on disaster risk reduction and livelihood rehabilitation for the early recovery phase.
The rushing flood waters from typhoon Washi (local name Sendong) and with it logs and boulders, first smashed into Digkilaan, an upstream barangay between the Iligan mountain ranges and Mandulog River, before it pounded the downstream areas of Iligan.
More than 1,500 people have died and more than 1,100 are missing up to this day in the 7 regions, (12 provinces, 8 cities and 18 municipalities and 140 barangays) hit by Washi. More than 40,000 houses were washed away or buried in the mud. Many houses were levelled by logs and boulders carried by rushing flood waters.
More than 500 households were assisted with cash and relief goods in Iligan City and in Valencia and Sibulan in Negros Oriental.
